Find Appetizer Recipe Ideas to suit all types of parties and all budgets

Appetizer recipes

Appetizer Recipe ideas are ideal if you just want to serve finger foods at your party. No need to worry about providing cutlery- just present the appetizers on platters, and provide plates and plenty of napkins- they are an ideal birthday party food.

When thinking about portions, as a guide I will make 7 different types of appetizer recipe, and estimate about 14 appetizers per person. This is an easy calculation- I make 2 portions of each party food appetizer per person. If you have really big eaters coming to your party, you may wish to increase the number of finger foods per person.

If you are serving party food appetizers as a meal, reduce your number of portions by half.

Use chips, nuts, olives and bread rolls as additional fillers.

The appetizer recipes on this page are all easy to make and look great. Presentation is important- arrange on platters or co-ordinating plates for a great look to your party table.

Crostini
These are just delicious, and look wonderful on platters. Buy sticks of French or Italian style bread, and cut into ½ inch slices. Pop under the broiler to lightly toast both sides. Allow to cool. Add a range of toppings. With crostini, the enjoyment is just as much in the look as in the taste. Take your time, and make these delicious to look at as well as eat. Some of my favourite cold toppings include:

  1. Put a small slice of ham onto the bread. Top with a small piece of sun dried tomato and a tiny basil leaf
  2. Put thin slices of pastrami onto the bread and top with tiny pieces of dill pickle
  3. Spread a little cranberry sauce over the bread. Top with a chunk of creamy brie cheese
  4. Make up special tuna mayo using tinned tuna, mayo and very finely chopped green onion. Place a spoonful in the centre of a piece of the bread and top with a piece of fresh parsley

Ham and Cheese Spirals
This is a very easy party recipe to make, but looks impressive. You need slices of ham and your favorite cream cheese.

  1. Simply lay out the slices of ham onto a sheet of cling wrap.
  2. Spread the cream cheese thinly over the ham and roll using the longest side of the ham, until the ham is fully rolled.
  3. Seal the roll with the cling wrap and put in the refrigerator for at least a two hours.
  4. Remove the ham when you are ready to serve it, and remove the plastic wrap.
  5. Use a very sharp knife (careful!) to cut the ham roll into slices, as if cutting a jelly roll. I prefer ½ inch thick spirals, but you may wish them to be thinner.
  6. If not serving immediately, put the ham spirals back in the fridge.

Shrimp with Garlic Dressing
Make a dressing using olive oil, garlic, chopped coriander and mustard. Add salt and pepper as needed. Take medium to large pre-cooked, peeled shrimp, and toss in the dressing. Put in the refrigerator for a minimum of two hours to let the flavors infuse.

Crudites
Chopped fresh vegetables, including carrot sticks, celery stalks, cucumber batons, and crispy bell peppers make a simple addition to your appetizer recipes. In the summer, I serve them in straight tall glasses, which I place in bowls of crushed ice to keep the vegetables ice cold.

Serve with a selection of Dips.

Cheese and Pineapple Ball
This is one from my childhood. My grandma would make this for all our family parties, and I thought that it looked so exotic. It's such an easy appetizer recipe to make.
To make this you will need a large round fruit- like a grapefruit.

  • Slice a piece of the fruit off to create a base that allows the fruit to stand firmly on a serving dish. Cover the fruit neatly in one layer of foil. This forms your ball.
  • You also need toothpicks (cocktail sticks).
  • For the cheese and pineapple sticks, cut a hard cheese like cheddar, or American, into 1/2 inch cubes.
  • Next, cut fresh, or canned, pineapple into similar sized cubes.
  • Place a cube of pineapple, then a cube of cheese onto each toothpick.
  • Stick the toothpick into the foil covered grapfruit.
  • Continue making the pineapple and cheese sticks, and sticking these into the fruit, until the grapefruit is neatly covered.

Hot Appetizer Recipe Ideas

Hot Crostini
Make crostini bread bases by slicing French or Italian style bread into ½ inch slices. Place under a preheated broiler until lightly toasted.

  1. Mozzerella and parma ham. Put a small slice of the cheese onto the toasted bread, and top with the ham. Return to broiler just before serving to melt the cheese and crisp the ham.
  2. Put a slice of gruyere cheese onto the bread and top with a slice of mushrooms. Put under a pre-heated broiler just before serving until cheese bubbles.
  3. Spread a blob of cranberry sauce on the bread and top with a chunk of brie cheese. Serve cold, or put under the preheated broiler until the cheese begins to melt.
  4. Place a small slice of American cheese onto the bread. Top with a small piece of cooked burger. Add another tiny slice of cheese on top. Place under a pre heated broiler until the cheese bubbles. Secure the mini burger with a cocktail stick and serve. This works well with most hard cheeses, including cheddar and Monterey Jack.

Pour over your favourite wing, or BBQ sauce. Bake at 350F (180F) for about 35 mins, until chicken cooked. Baste the chicken part way through cooking.
