Luau Party Invitations
Luau Flip Flop Invitation
This is an easy Luau Birthday Party invitation to make yourself. Just buy a bunch of cheap flip flops, or beach shoes. Using an indelible marker pen, write out your party details (include the reason for party, type of party, date, venue and RSVP details) on either the sole or the insole of the shoe. You can give these out as is, or dress them up a little, using jewels, feathers, flowers- whatever takes your fancy.

Luau Flower Invitation
Another easy invitation idea for a Luau Birthday Party uses fake flowers. Get a bunch of fake flowers with stems, or make some using craft papers. Cut the stems so that they are about 1 inch long. Using brighly colored paper, write out your party details, and attach the paper to the stem. You can laminate the paper before you attach it if you wish, but this isn't really necessary.

Costumes for Luau Parties
Encourage yor guests to come in costume to your Luau Birthday Party. Bathing suits and a summer wrap make a wonderful, but simple, Luau costume. Dress with a Lei, some bangles, and you are all set.Costumes for this party are easily put together at home, but you can buy Luau costumes at many costume outlets and, ofcourse, online.

No Luau costume would be complete without a Lei. These can be presented to guests on their arrival, and make a delightful keepsake for your guests to take home. You can purchase fresh and fake Lei's from a number of outlets. However, it is really fun to make your own.

How to make a Lei
To make a fresh flower Lei, you will need
  1. Thick thread, about 8 inches longer than you want the Lei to be
  2. A large sewing needle, or if you have one a Lei needle
  3. Fresh flowers of you choice, with their stems removed
  1. To begin, tie a knot where you want one end of the Lei to finish (about 4 inches from one end)
  2. Next, thread the needle onto the thick thread
  3. Take one flower at a time, and carefully add each flower to the Lei by threading the needle through the center of the flower
  4. Tie the Lei off, and mist with water
  5. Put in a sealable bag and keep moist
  6. Keep in the refrigerator until needed but don't let it get too cold, or the flowers will lose their freshness

Luau Birthday Party Food
Luau party food is easy to make, but is full of delicious rich flavors.
Roast pig is the traditional Luau dish, and is spit roasted in authentic Luau's. For a small party, use a cut of pork and either cook it on your BBQ, or in your oven if you don't have a spit roaster.

Chicken baked with coconut is another Luau favorite. Use chicken breasts, add cubed sweet potatoes, top with creamed coconut or coconut milk sweetened with a little sugar or maple syrup, cover and bake in the oven, or on the BBQ until the chicken is thoroughly cooked and the potatoes are soft.

Fresh fruits, served with chocolate or cream cheese dip are a simple, but delicious dessert.

Grilled pineapple, sprinkled with sugar and put on the BBQ until the sugar caramalizes is yummy. Serve with ice cream, or heavy cream.

Bananas, split, and filled with marshmallows and chocolate, wrapped in foil and put on the BBQ, or in the oven, to cook is a staple for any outdoor party

Luau Birthday Party Games
Pass the coconut
Gather your guests into a circle. Pass the coconut around the circle as music is played. When the music stops, whoever is holding it is out. The music starts again, and play continues, with the circle reducing each time the music stops. The winner is the last person left in the circle.

Hula Dancing Competition
This is a classic Luau Birthday Party game!Put on some Hula dancing tunes, and gather your guests for a fun Hula dancing competition. Choose someone to judge, and have a few prizes for best dancer, most humorous dancer etc.

Pass the Hoop
Sticking to the Hula theme, split your party guests into teams, and ask each team to form a line. Have a wall, or marker to indicate where the teams have to skip to. A circuit is completed when a team member skips, using a hoop, to the marker, turns around and skips back to their team, handing the hoop to the next person in line from their team. The front of the line is the starting point. Your guests have to skip through the hula hoop, (using the hula hoop and a sort of jump rope, basically hopping over it, then bringing it over your head, repeating this movement as you run toward your goal), and complete the circuit. They then hand the hoop to the next person in line on their team, who repeats the circuit. The winning team is the first team to have all its team members complete the circuit and return the hoop to the front of the line.

For this game you need a long pole and two people to hold the ends. Play some fun party music, and have the guests line up behind the pole. To limbo, the person must move under the pole by leaning their body backwards, with their face facing the pole. Each person dances toward the pole, then limbos under the pole without touching it. The pole gets lowered after everyone has had a turn, and continues to be lowered until no one can manage to get under it
