White Cake Recipe

White cake recipes make elegant birthday cakes. Smooth and substantial, white cakes are satisfying without being too filling. The smooth texture of the cake goes particularly well with light chocolate frostings, fluffy buttercreams and marshmallow frostings.

Rich White Cake This is a very smooth, rich cake and is a yummy birthday cake recipe. As with all cakes, be accurate with the measurements to get the best results. The recipe below makes an 8 inch layer cake:

  • 10 oz (315g) flour
  • 12 oz (375g) sugar
  • 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 6 oz (190g) shortening
  • 4 fl oz (8 tablespoons) milk
  • 4 fl oz (8 tablespoons) water
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 egg whites
  1. Grease and flour the baking pans
  2. Sift together the flour and baking powder into a large mixing bowl
  3. Add the sugar and the salt
  4. Mix in the butter, or margarine
  5. Add the milk, the water and the vanilla
  6. Beat for a couple of minutes until well mixed
  7. Add the unbeaten egg whites
  8. Beat the mixture for another couple of minutes
  9. Pour into the prepared baking pans and bake at 350F (180C) for 25-30 minutes.
